This is part of a series of summaries of the routes in Uta no Prince-sama All Star After Secret. Heavy spoilers for the game and Uta no Prince-sama All Star ahoy!
Today’s covers Mikaze Ai’s Route A. Unlike the other games, the senpai each have two routes, one for each song. Each route has two endings. The first ending is the one you get if your love or music meter is below 80%.
My Japanese is limited, so apologies if I misunderstood anything. If I got something wrong, please feel free to tell me.
Warning: long post ahead! Line breaks correspond with the end of a chapter.
Haruka has been working at the agency for over two years. She has to go to the agency.
She can hear voices arguing. Ranmaru is accusing Camus of not putting enough power into the song. Camus blames Ranmaru for throwing off the balance of the song. They go back and forth for a while, with Ranmaru saying the heart is the most important part while Camus says the other needs to think more. Reiji finally interrupts them and tries to calm them down. He asks Ai for help. Ai says that they always do this. Ai points out that Reiji fell at their previous live. Reiji is like, “My bad! But accidents spice things up!” Ai still doesn’t feel the need to stop them, but he finally agrees to Reiji’s pleas. Ai distracts Camus by asking about unusual sweets while Reiji distracts Ranmaru with the promise of Kotobuki Bentou samples. After things settle down, they four invite Haruka inside. They wonder why she was hiding. They’re all waiting for Shining. Haruka thinks about how Quartet Night was formed. Shining suddenly busts in and announces the four are going to sing solo songs. Quartet Night has no problem with that. Then he wonders why Haruka is there.
Ai says he invited Haruka and worries if she got injured when Shining jumped out the window (or crashed into the wall. Can’t remember). Reiji teases them, but Ai doesn’t care. The other members of Quartet Night know Ai and Haruka are going out, and Reiji reminds them that love is forbidden for idols. Reiji tries to pump everyone up, but the others ignore him. Camus wants to know more about the sweets and Ranmaru the bentou. Haruka wants to work hard for the new song.
Ai invites Haruka over, and they’ve each made sandwiches for lunch. Ai made a huge stack of fruit sandwiches while Haruka made tuna and egg sandwiches. He insists on feeding her. Haruka thinks back about their past, and Ai talks about how he came back. All Ai could hear was Aine’s voice, and Aine managed to return Ai’s consciousness. When Ai awoke, he heard Haruka’s song and found himself at the beach. Haruka still feels uneasy, and Ai assures her that he’s real. Then he confesses that he’s anxious, and Haruka tells him, “Welcome home.”
They start talking about the song contest, and Haruka suggests Ai try something new. Ai agrees and wants to challenge himself. He wants to be someone new (i.e. not Aine’s copy). They then go out on a date. Ai asks to hold hands, then he starts wondering which hand he’s supposed to hold! They start walking, but something’s still not right. Ai decides it’s the setting, so he calls starts calling her “my princess” and calls himself he’s the prince. (Yeah, he’s definitely Syo’s senpai.) Ai wonders what else lovers do, but Haruka tells him being together is enough. Then he kisses her on the cheek. Ai still wants to be more raburabu, but Haruka replies he’s a wonderful boyfriend. Ai still wonders though, since the guy is supposed to take the lead. Haruka says she looks forward to it. Then Ai talks about all his emotions, then he proclaims they’ll do the things only they can do.
Haruka wonders what kind of song to compose as she makes stew. Ai then brings over some marine jelly and they start to work on the song. Haruka is torn between a song to show off his kindness or a song to show off his coolness.
Haruka chooses the former. She plays it for him.
Ai thinks its a good song. When they start the arrangement, he says he feels uncomfortable. Haruka asks if its the song. Ai answers, it’s his body. It feels weak and the room temperature just went up. Ai then starts talking about a scent. It’s the stew! Ai scolds Haruka since something worse could have happened. He starts cleaning up the mess. Ai says he worries about Haruka when they are not together.
As Haruka walks Ai home, they bump into Natsuki and Syo. They are excited for Ai’s new song. Ai then goes into senpai mode. After they leave, Ai wants to practice more and be a true senpai.
Fast forward to Quartet Night being interviewed. The guy asks what kind of music did they like when they were small. Haruka worries about what Ai is going to say, but he brushes it off by saying it’s a secret and to look forward to his upcoming song. So then they keep talking about childhood memories, and the interviewer wants more info about the “mysterious idol”, but Ai counters saying he’s still a kid. The guy says to talk about his elementary days or his hometown. Ai starts hesitating. Reiji tries to direct the attention back to himself (because he knows Ai doesn’t want to talk about himself), but the dude won’t give up. Ai starts to lie about playing when he was small, but Ranmaru has sensed something about Ai’s hesitancy and abruptly leaves. Camus and Reiji cover for the two.
After an autograph session, Ai tells Haruka he’s not very good at them. Ai shows the letters “a” and “i” in his name. (Ai’s name is written as the kanji for indigo.) He asks if she knows what it means, but Haruka answers with “love” (“ai”). He’s surprised and gives her an autograph. Then he mentions how things would have gone bad if Ranmaru hadn’t left. He has no memories to talk about. It didn’t bother him before, but memories make people. Haruka doesn’t know what to say, but Ai says it’s fine. He’ll sing her songs. Then Shining appears to give Ai a job.
Haruka shows up at the studio. Ai is dressed in what looks like a school uniform, but it’s a famous brand of clothing. Haruka says he looks good, like a student. Ai is not too thrilled. Then the staff starts talking about school, so Haruka secretly phones Ai to get him out of there. Ai leaves and holds her hand. Haruka is surprised. Ai apologizes and asks if she is free tonight. He wants to go to the school and get a sense of school life.
They go to Saotome Gakuen. Ai wonders why it’s so noisy at a place for learning. Then some girls talk about seeing Quartet Night on Song Station. One mentions that Reiji went to Saotome Gakuen but is unsure about the others. Ai continues to analyze the school, even taking notes. Haruka shows Ai around. If she takes him to the pool, he asks if other people have seen her in a swimsuit. She says yes and he doesn’t like that. Of course, Haruka doesn’t understand why.
Haruka wonders what else is there to see, and Ai suggests playing hooky because that’s what Reiji said he did. Then they get spotted and Ai pulls her into a locker. They run to the roof next. Ai then sees students doing different things, and Haruka explains what they are doing. Ai talks about different events like fireworks and going to the beach that make up youthful memories. He asks what kind of song Haruka would have composed if they were partners at the school. She replies it would be a song Ai would want to sing. Haruka starts talking about her school life. Evening comes, and Ai mentions that he’s happy. He is sure they would have been like this even if they attended the school together. But he still would have liked to known her as regular students. Haruka says she can let him see her future, though. They then promise like they were students to be together forever and pass the graduation audition to debut. Ai mentions he’s changed since he’s fallen in love with Haruka, like he can’t calm down. Not everything can be answered so simply anymore. She tells him uncertainty is a part of being human. Haruka then says that sports are also an important part of youth. Ai then asks if he could go to Koshien (high school baseball tournament). Obviously not.
Haruka and Ai work on the song. She’s pretty proud of it, and Ai wants to hear what kind of Ai she has found. Ai praises the song but worries about being able to sing it. He got lost in the song festival but now wants to respond to Haruka’s hopes. The song is her love for him. Haruka says to face his worries. He agrees and will show her a new Ai.
Ai then starts thinking about the lab and the professor. He and the professor have not spoken, so Ai doesn’t know how the professor feels about Aine still in the “white world” (i.e. asleep and unconscious). Ai remarks he’s probably irrelevant to the professor. Haruka doesn’t believe it. Ai says his thoughts go in a loop. Haruka tries to reassure him and tells him to think about things slowly.
On another day, Haruka is talking about the song, but Ai is spacing out. Ai still hasn’t come up with an answer about the professor. Ai asks how the professor and him looked to her, and she says family. Suddenly, Ranmaru wakes up. Neither Ai nor Haruka noticed him sleeping. Ai asks if Ranmaru heard anything, but he just leaves when Ai mentions he and Haruka were talking. Ai calls Ranmaru back. Ranmaru doesn’t completely understand but thinks they were talking about Ai’s parent. Ai asks for advice without explaining about himself and tells Ranmaru he’s lost for the first time in his life. Ranmaru gives some indirect advice about talking to people can raise a fuss, but that’s life,. Ai is still confused. Ranmaru (nicely) tells Ai that it’s his problem but to listen to his soul.
Haruka thinks back on Ai and Ranmaru’s conversation while working in the recording room. She knows Ai can’t become fully human. But she believes the professor knows that Aine will not come back even if Ai stops singing. Syo then texts her, offering his support if she ever needs it.
Haruka goes to the agency and literally bumps into Reiji. He asks what’s wrong. He then teases her by asking if she’s lonely without Ai, but he can tell her where he’s working. Haruka notes that Reiji was the first of Quartet Night to realize she and Ai were going out. Reiji says Ai has already returned home. Reiji talks about how today’s job was difficult since they were doing a survival game. (I would totally pay to see an episode where the senpai and kouhai team up and battle each other in a survival game.) Anyways, Reiji says Ai mentioned a new problem and then returned. He asks if Ai is ill since Ai is not the type to say anything. Haruka apologizes for making Reiji worry, which he laughs off. She then gets serious and asks what he would do if Aine returned. Reiji what she means. Haruka stammers, but Reiji responds he would apologize to Aine. He asks if she thought he overlapped Ai with Aine. He says it’s okay if she thought so, and but even if parts of them do overlap, “AiAi is AiAi”. Reiji tells her he’s jealous that Ai has someone that can tell him take care and welcome home, so make sure you do that, okay, Kouhai-chan? Reiji asks if he was any help, and Haruka says yes. Then Reiji states he’s looking forward to their composition.
On another day, Haruka finishes the song. There hasn’t been any messages from the agency for a while. Ai calls, but he sounds strange. Haruka asks what’s wrong. Ai gets all serious. “Um, Haruka. How do you…ride a bicycle?” Ai says Reiji mentioned riding a bike in an interview and he realized he was the only one who hasn’t. So Ai gives a try and promptly crashes. “I thought so. Isn’t this thing really hard?” Ai is all serious about riding but is not doing well. Haruka demonstrates the proper way to ride a bike, and Ai starts calling her sensei. After the lesson, Haruka plays the song. Ai says Haruka made the song to showcase his kind and warm side, but it’s like the song is wrapping him up in emotions. He asks Haruka for a little more patience until he can truly sing the song. She looks forward to it.
Ai finally manages to ride the bike. He’s so happy that he crashes. He feels great but Haruka asks not to make her worry. They hug. Walking home, she asks if he’s going to see the professor. He replies yes, he’s not afraid anymore. Ai thanks Haruka with a kiss on her forehead.
They go to the lab. Ai asks to hold hands. The professor shows up and greets them. He asks why they’ve come. Ai sounds a little tsundere but says he just wanted to see the professor’s face. The professor remarks that sounds very human-like. Nobody says anything for awhile, but then the professor suddenly declares Aine has woken up. He hasn’t seen him yet, however. They talk about Aine. Ai is curious but conflicted. Aine woke up on the night of the song festival by hearing Ai’s song. The professor thanks Ai, but Ai doesn’t want to hear that. He thinks the professor doesn’t need anymore since Ai’s role is over. The professor tries to interrupt, but Ai continues. Why was he revived if Aine woke up? The professor replies Ai is needed by many people, including Haruka. He thought Ai would not want to see him. The professor apologizes, but Ai says if it weren’t for him, Ai wouldn’t be here. And although Ai and Aine identical, Ai is his own person. Ai bites his lip to keep from crying.
Haruka and the professor step outside. He talks some more about Ai’s data and return. Someday Ai and Aine will meet, and the professor asks Haruka to take care of Ai. Haruka says Ai needs him, too. The professor responds, of course, there’s maintenance…but he also cares for Ai like a son. Ai comes outside, then the professor tells a story a professor and a robot. The professor called the robot A.I. But one night, he went to the sea at night, and the sky was indigo-colored. Just as the dawn comes, he wanted the robot to become human. That’s why that robot was named “Ai”. The professor asks what Ai thought of the story. Ai replies that it’s not bad. The professor tells Ai that if he wishes so, they will always be Ai and the professor.
Ai and Haruka leave and go for a walk. Ai mentions he wants to see this indigo-colored sky. It doesn’t matter if the story the professor told was real or not because, for the first time, he has a meaning for his name. The professor told him Ai and Aine are different, so Ai has a place in the professor’s life. Ai hugs Haruka and talks about how being human is tough. He mentions he was surprised when Haruka said “love” was the other meaning of his name. Now he really feels like shouting out love. He finally is his own existence. Ai is truly happy and ready to sing. He kisses Haruka’s cheek and thanks her again for loving him, then they kiss. He sings his song “A.I“.
Haruka applauds. Ai feels so happy and his heart is free. He wants to thanks all the people who helped him and show them the current Ai. He’s counting on his dear lover and partner to continue to support him. They take a walk on the beach. Ai returned because there’s more to know and see. He has important people, and he wants to improve. Haruka will always be the most important, though, and Ai will always be the most important to Haruka. Ai reveals he was a little worried since he’s not a normal person. Haruka says to not think like that.
Quartet Night is having a meeting. Reiji proclaims Ai surpassed his limits on his latest song, and Ai agrees. Reiji asks if there’s anything else to discuss. Ai starts to bring up Ranmaru’s advice from earlier, but he isn’t explaining himself well. The others are confused. Ai sulks and says never mind. The others leave. Ai talks about Ranmaru’s advice to ask his soul. That made Ai make up mind to see the professor. He can talk about this stuff to Haruka but not the others. Haruka encourages Ai, who promptly goes after Ranmaru. Ai asks if they can talk. Ai talks about how Ranmaru’s advice helped him and how he would have regretted not going to see his “family”. Ranmaru doesn’t seem to remember, but when he does, he says Ai is ultimately the one who made that decision. They go back and forth, Ai saying it was important to him, Ranmaru saying it was not. Things start to get heated, but Ai thanks Ranmaru. He’s a little surprised, but calls Ai an idiot and hits him on the head. This is not like you, he says. Ai scowls. Ai knows it’s not like himself but he’s changing. Ranmaru begins messing with Ai, pulling his hair. Ranmaru is happy for Ai that he’s looking forward now. Oh, by the way, that reminds me, return my bike! Ai pales, and Ranmaru tells Haruka how Ai came to borrow his bike since he couldn’t ride one for some strange reason. Ai tells Ranmaru he did learn to ride, and by doing so, he learned other things as well. Ranmaru gives Ai some more advice, and Ai is like, “Who’s not himself now?” in revenge. Ai thanks Ranmaru. Ranmaru wants his bike back, but Ai refuses. “Why not?!” “It broke.” Of course, Ranmaru is pissed. But they leave the agency before things get out of hand, and Reiji and Camus are waiting for them.
True Love Ending:
Haruka is crying in happiness. Ai asks if his feelings were conveyed. She replies yes as they snuggle. Ai teases Haruka since she’s crying too much. He’s a bit jealous since he can’t cry. They keep embracing as Ai tells he loves her.
One day, they are going out on a date. As Haruka waits, she spots Ai’s, Syo’s, and Natsuki’s CDs. She thinks about all the positive feedback for Ai’s song, and she goes to buy a copy. Ai shows up and is like, “Uh, you composed that. Why are you buying it?” to Haruka. She says she’s buying it as a fan. Ai laughs and promises he’ll sing live for her again. He’ll also take requests because she’s special.
A couple of fans spot Ai, but they aren’t sure if it’s him because of his height. Ai and Haruka run away. He takes her to see an indigo-colored sky. They go to the sea. He says he loves the sea now, and together they’ll make new memories. Ai declares it’s like he was reborn in the sea.
Haruka falls asleep and awakens the next morning. Ai watched Haruka the whole night. They lookout at the sunrise over the sea. Ai talks about all the people who watched over him. His name now means “love”, and Haruka is the one who taught him that. He wonders if he is properly expressing his love, and she assures him that his feelings are reaching her. He talks about how the music they make is a miracle. He swears to make her happy forever. He seals his vow with a kiss. He then starts kissing her whole face, but it’s still not enough. After making out, he talks about their dreams. After telling her he loves her, Ai asks Haruka for another kiss.
