This is part of a series of summaries of the routes in Uta no Prince-sama All Star After Secret. Heavy spoilers for the game and all previous Utapri games ahoy!
Today’s covers Kurusu Syo’s route. Starish each has one route with two endings. Note that the routes seem to take place after Debut and not after Rainbow Route in All Star. Both Rainbow Route endings are considered True Love endings, but A is the one you get when your love or music meter is below 80%.
My Japanese is limited, so apologies if I misunderstood anything. If I got something wrong, please feel free to tell me.
Warning: long post ahead! Line breaks correspond with the end of a chapter.
Haruka finishes work for the day at the agency. She’s 18 and has been working on various BGM. But today she’s going to also going to give a new composition to her boyfriend and partner. She has to hurry home but hears voices. She opens the door, and Syo is yelling at Natsuki. He says it was unfair to face Natsuki in a bread eating contest. Natsuki doesn’t understand why. Otoya is trying to calm Syo down. Masato points out that it didn’t matter about the bread if Syo can’t answer the quiz questions. Otoya says he had to go back to start five times because it was so difficult. Tokiya says it’s because Otoya took off before hearing the whole question. Ren remarks Tokiya skipped the bread race because it seemed too difficult. Cecil claims it’s because Tokiya hates high calorie bread, but Tokiya denies it.
Haruka thinks back on how she debuted because of Starish’s support. (The group isn’t called Starish here, but I’m going to.) Otoya and Syo notice Haruka and invite her inside. Natsuki says they all were at the same location today. The others mention they have been working together a lot. In fact, Ren explains, they were on a sports variety show, divided into three teams. Team 1 was Masato and Natsuki. Team 2 was Tokiya, Syo, and Cecil. Team 3 was Ren and Otoya. Ren asks Haruka which team she thinks won.
Haruka says Team 2. Tokiya is smart, Syo has the athletic abilities, and Cecil is good at encouraging people. Syo was excited and got lucky on the questions. Cecil says he’s also lucky. Syo asks about Cecil’s injury from falling down, but Cecil says it’s no problem. He’s just glad he got the answer right. Tokiya is like, you didn’t know the answer?! Cecil’s like nope, just a guess. Tokiya is amazed.
Haruka is happy they’re getting so popular. She thinks about how different it is from when she was alone and couldn’t debut. Starish points out that it’s thanks to her and her songs. They decide to head home, and Syo assures Haruka he’ll defeat any bad guys that people. Cecil asks Haruka to keep making wonderful music.
Haruka is at the cafe, and Tomo rushes in, apologizing. They haven’t seen each other in a while because of their work. They split some cake and chat. Tomo asks how Haruka and her boyfriend are doing. Haruka starts panicking. Tomo asks if she’s bashful, and Haruka says it’s a little embarrassing. Tomo laughs and wishes for her excitement. She passes it off as a joke, saying it’s impossible for an idol. Haruka thinks about how her love life is a secret, but Tomo tells her she knows Haruka and her boyfriend are serious. Tomo then pulls out a magazine from Starish’s event yesterday and gives it to Haruka. She knows Haruka will want to read the interviews.
They part, promising to keep in contact and go out again. She then goes to read her boyfriend’s interview.
Syo is a a meeting discussing advertising a sports drink. Since the CM (commercial) is supposed to be set in summer, he suggests an uptempo number. He’s excited since he’s always wanted to do a CM. Ryuya had once did a CM for this company, and due to a change in schedule, the senpai couldn’t do it, which is why Syo is doing it. Haruka is happy for him. Syo and Haruka read through the materials, and the keyword is “challenge!” for the project. He likes the sound of that. The client suddenly gets serious; there’s something he needs to discuss. Well, actually, they want to record Syo bungee jumping. (LOL.) Syo is so shocked he actually asks the client to repeat himself. Yep, bungee jumping, no stuntman. Syo hesitates, but he is intrigued by the idea of surpassing all the senpai. He accepts. He’ll pass on the idea that you can overcome any “challenge” to all of Japan. Haruka wants to support Syo. The client is a little surprised Syo accepted the job but is ecstatic.
(Side note: the game misspells “little” as “littele” in the scene changes. Rofl.)
After the client leaves, Syo admits he’s surprised and nervous. But he’s a pro so he accepted the job. He has confidence that he’ll be able to do it. Haruka looks forward to seeing the cool Syo, but that makes Syo more nervous. Haruka giggles, but Syo points out that Haruka has her own work to do. He won’t sing any song but hers.
Later, Syo and Haruka are looking at all the requests for jobs for him. Haruka is amazed, but Syo says it’s normal. Haruka asks what job he likes, and he likes being the host.
Syo has a day off, so the two of them decide to go to his house to watch a movie. He talks about how much he’s looking forward to the CM and singing Haruka’s song. He’s changed a lot because of her, and wants to keep challenging himself. He’ll do the arrangement for the song. After all, “change” is closely tied to “challenge”. Haruka gets really excited. Syo again says she’s adding pressure and teases her by poking her cheek. Suddenly Syo gets very serious. Haruka correctly guesses that Syo wants to work on the song.
They go to the recording room. They begin discussing the song’s image and concepts. Haruka gets an idea and plays on the piano. Syo loves it and hugs her in happiness. Afterwards, he walks her home. He knows he can overcome any hurdle. He then thinks about how far they’ve come since school, and he remarks how serious and pro-like Haruka is when she’s working. He compliments her and again talks about how glad he is that she’s his partner. Haruka is embarrassed but happy. She responds it’s amazing how Syo gets along with everyone and helps out when needed. Syo says he still doesn’t know all of Haruka’s good points and starts listing them, like how she doesn’t budge when working on a song. Haruka gets embarrassed and replies, well, I must have bad points, too, right? But Syo says he loves everything about her. Just by thinking of her he becomes stronger due to the power of love.
Then he suddenly gets really excited. “Fu fu fu…Ta-da! This is why I’m so full of energy!” He pulls out a phone. He’s in charge of keeping the “my cute girlfriend collection” safe and secure. Haruka goes through it and finds a bunch of pictures of herself, including some where she’s eating and sleeping. Haruka tries to get the phone so she can delete them, but Syo won’t let her get rid of them that easily. She keeps jumping and failing. Finally she moves on to a tickle attack. It almost works, but Syo turns it around and tickles her in revenge. Plan fails. Syo agrees to delete the embarrassing photos. He grabs her suddenly and takes a picture of the two of them. Syo sends the photo to Haruka who feels content now. Syo tells her he’ll take her out to eat, his treat, so name the place. Haruka chooses ramen. He’s a little disappointed that she chose something so ordinary, but he acquiesces. They walk hand in hand to the shop.
Haruka has been working on other jobs. Syo has another day off, so he and Haruka are at his room. He’s holding her as they watch TV. It is showing a gorgeous seaside resort. Syo asks if that is what she would like. Haruka says, “Yes, it looks delicious!” She was watching the food on TV. Syo sighs and says she looks so happy looking at food, maybe he should add this face to his collection? Haruka does not realize that she made such a happy face. Syo sighs and she does. He’d prefer that she feast on him instead. That embarrasses Haruka, and Syo teases her some more. He gets a phone call and steps aside to answer it. Syo starts to protest to the other person on the line while Haruka wonders what’s up. It’s Kaoru, Syo’s twin. Syo apologizes for their day being interrupted, but Haruka is looking forward to seeing Kaoru again. Syo is not too thrilled about Kaoru coming to visit suddenly and interrupting their day. But at least they can enjoy their time until he arrives! He grabs Haruka and embraces her. Haruka’s heartbeat goes up, and Syo tells her he loves her and wants to spend more time like this. Just when they are about to kiss, the doorbell rings. Haruka pushes him away. She feels bad about both pushing him and staying while Kaoru visits. Just before Syo answers the door, he gives her a light kiss.
Kaoru comes in. Haruka is worried she’ll slip up and say something. Kaoru gives Syo his favorite pudding. Kaoru is doing well in school, studying hard to be a doctor. He wanted to support the physically weak Syo who had a heart condition but now wants to help others. Syo assures Kaoru he’s fine now, and Kaoru sighs, “Yeah, yeah, you keep saying it’s the power of love. Enough.” Haruka can’t believe Syo said that. Kaoru says Syo wants to look cool in front of his girlfriend. Haruka replies that Syo is always cool, and Syo responds that he’ll be even cooler for her. Kaoru wants them to save the love talk for when they’re alone. Kaoru does feel better that Syo has someone to support him. Syo hints about his new project and wants Haruka to play the song for Kaoru. Syo is really excited about the song’s progress. They’ll work on it more together. Kaoru remarks about how raburabu they are, which embarrasses the couple. He compliments the song, though, saying it’s a completely new image of Syo. He says it’s full of power and the concept of a challenge. Haruka is surprised Kaoru could figure it out and says he and Syo really are twins.
Kaoru is getting ready to go home. Haruka asks if he wants to stay a little longer, but Kaoru replies that he can’t keep his girlfriend waiting. This shocks Syo and even more so when he finds out it’s a beautiful older woman. This fires Syo up even more since he doesn’t want to lose to his younger brother.
A few days later, Haruka is working on the song. Something is missing from the song. She can’t figure out what’s wrong with it, so she watches some TV to take a break. The news is talking about Syo’s upcoming CM. Haruka turns the TV off. She can’t be taking a break now. The next morning, Syo calls. The CM is complete. Haruka thinks about how she is worried about the composition, then Syo asks her how it’s going. Haruka says it’s fine. Syo scolds her for lying and that she should just say something when things are bad. There’s been a lot of rain lately, but it’s a sunny day, so Syo invites Haruka out. She has no idea where they are going to go.
Syo takes Haruka to a beautiful seaside restaurant. They have a table on the deck all decorated with candles. Haruka asks why Syo brought her here, and he says it’s because she wanted to come, no other reason necessary. Haruka then remembers their conversation during the movie. Syo asks her if she didn’t want to come, but Haruka is just surprised and also happy. It’s like a dream. They go to order, but they have no idea what to get since the menu is in French and English. Haruka leaves it up to Syo who asks for the waiter’s recommendation. They are served some cider and toast their glasses. Syo is glad to see Haruka smiling, but she admits she’s nervous. Syo suggests they hold hands. He grabs hers but she pulls away in surprise. She grabs his hand this time. He intertwines their fingers and says he wants loves her and wants to eat her. Haruka asks about the CM. Syo thought it was impossible at first, but with a little courage, he could do it. He would think about her songs whenever he felt like giving up. They enjoy the rest of their date.
A few days later, Syo invites Haruka to lunch. She wonders if it’s alright to go to the studio. He’s doing a variety show, and Haruka thinks about how she hasn’t heard anything about the song from the client. She wants the song to be good enough for the client. She enters the studio and see Syo in a monster costume being glomped by Natsuki. Natsuki complains he hasn’t seen Syo in a while and had to hold back. Ai tells them both to leave. Syo complains that the zipper is stuck. Then they all spot Haruka. Ai stares at her for a while then says something like, “So that’s why Syo is in such a rush today.” Syo panics and denies it. Ai says Syo kept looking at his phone and grinning. Ai then talks about how Syo and Natsuki make a good pair to do tsukkomi. Haruka states the three of them make a good team.
Syo and Haruka go to a park for lunch. They talk about the song and what to convey in it. Syo wants to sing her song. He says people have to fight with themselves to get anywhere. He wants to be himself as an idol, even if he’s seen as uncool. If he fulfills his dream piece by piece, an even bigger dream will be fulfilled. Syo apologizes for talking so much. Regardless of his dream, he wants to be with Haruka. Together, they can fulfill both of their dreams, right, Haruka? She tries to change the subject. She then blurts out that she can’t do it. Syo asks her what she means. Haruka says she feels anxious whenever she faces the song. Syo says he loves the song, but Haruka responds there needs to be something more. He tells her she needs to believe in herself more. But she’s afraid her composition will blow Syo’s big opportunity. She wonders if she’s really good enough to be Syo’s partner. Syo can’t believe Haruka said that and tells her their partnership is over. He walks away.
Four days later, Haruka and Syo haven’t spoken. She is depressed as she works in her room. Natsuki then texts her on behalf of Kaoru. She calls Kaoru and they agree to meet at a cafe.
At the cafe, Kaoru asks Haruka if she has any worries. He knows it’s connected to Syo because they’re twins and have telepathy. Haruka is amazed, but Kaoru admits it was a joke; Syo had contacted him. Haruka explains what happened. Kaoru asks if Haruka is going to give up. If she gives up, isn’t she not believing in Syo? Haruka proclaims she believes in Syo, and Kaoru tells her he’s at the recording room. He’s been rehearsing all day. Haruka dashes out of the cafe.
Syo is muttering to himself. He’s working on the lyrics but is not satisfied. Haruka enters. Syo reminds her they’re no longer partners, but she asks him to listen to her song. She confesses that she was full of worries but now believes in herself, and that means believing in their dream. She requests to be his partner again and plays her composition. He says she’s amazing and wants to listen to it again and again. He tells her he loves her work, as expected of his partner! Haruka realizes he said he was dissolving their partnership on purpose to get her to believe in herself. There will be hard times, but he will be there for her and she’ll be there for him. Syo apologizes for saying they were no longer partners, but Haruka says she’s glad he did. Haruka goes to pump her fist but loses her balance. Haruka apologizes, but Syo thinks he’s lucky since now she’s in his arms.
The hall for Syo’s CM premier is packed. He appears on stage. The interview begins, and he talks about his feelings in getting this job. Syo tells the audience that “change” is the other theme. People may be weak, but with a little courage, their dreams can come true. He encourages the audience to get fired up and live their lives to the fullest. He then performs “Challenge!” for everyone.
True Love Ending A:
A couple of girls talk about how the song is full of courage and excitement. Kaoru finds Haruka and compliments her song. Haruka thanks Kaoru for his advice from the other day. He’s just glad the two are doing fine. He says the song surely reached everyone’s heart. Kaoru mentions he once wanted to protect Syo, but now Syo is stronger. Kaoru has his own challenge to face to make his dream come true.
Haruka and the twins are walking together after the show. Syo is still hyped up, but Kaoru tells him to rest. The twins joke around. Syo invites Kaoru to dinner, but he’s not hungry. He’ll give Syo and Haruka some alone time since they’ve been gazing at each other all day. They deny it, but Kaoru says it’s all right, three’s a crowd. Kaoru leaves while the couple return home hand-in-hand.
Syo embraces Haruka as soon as they return home to his room. He asks if Haruka was lonely, because he was. He had trouble concentrating whenever Haruka was over and wishes for more of her. Haruka tells Syo thank you. Syo asks why is she thanking him, but it’s because she’s so happy. He rests his cheek on Haruka’s shoulder. She thinks that Syo is cute, but he knows right away. He pulls her in for a kiss. He tells her he loves her and kisses her again. “How’s that? You’re not going to say I’m cute or something?” He says he has to be a little mean to touch her, and now he’s fully serious. Haruka is embarrassed but tells him she does not not want to stop. Syo wants to see more of her cute troubled face. So they continue making out. She nearly faints. Syo apologizes for going too fast and says they can go at their own pace. He’s fine as long as he has Haruka’s smile and love. Even if they fight, he loves her. He escorts her away.
True Love Ending B:
The crowd goes wild. A couple of reporters discuss the song and the project’s success. Syo greets his fans. He gets a lot of compliments on the song. He asks the crowd the continue to support him.
Haruka and Syo have a day off. They’re at Haruka’s room. Syo’s been busy since the CM. One version of it is about to air on TV and they’re both excited. He wa nervous during filming. Haruka says she if she bungee jumped, she’d couldn’t look. Syo points out how she would then change. But the CM is a big success, and Syo is grateful for everyone’s support. He was physically weak when he was young and never thought he’d be able to do something like be an idol. But he can’t be afraid to move forward, even if he fails. Haruka thanks him for the work on the song, but Syo responds it was because of her own power. Then Syo mentions Kaoru messaged him. Kaoru says the song was really good and he needs to work hard as well. Then he says if the partnership had ended, he would pay back the damage times 3 for revenge. Kaoru signs off advising Syo to take care of his health. Haruka agrees. Syo then says, well, guess we’ll rest today and pulls her into his arms. Haruka tells him she can do anything with Syo by her side. He starts blushing and telling her she’s cute. Syo then misses a cute shot of Haruka. He is torn between getting his phone and staying as they are. Haruka calls him selfish, but Syo blames her for being too cute. She says he doesn’t need the pictures since she’ll always be with him. Syo is stunned into silence, then announces he has new challenges. They might not come true, however. First involves always doing his work well. Second is to be a big star so that their songs are heard everywhere. The third is the biggest one for him: proposing to Haruka. Haruka is flustered, but Syo says the real proposal is in the future. The tells her how much she means to him and how he swears to make her happy both personally and professionally. He loves her more than anyone else could and will protect her always. Haruka replies that Syo is also the most important person to her. He finally kisses her and asks her to watch over him as he takes on these new challenges. He pulls her even closer and asks to stay like that for a while longer. They spend the rest of the afternoon in each other’s arms. Haruka thinks about how she wants to continue these precious times.
