The Hakuoki Beauty Pageant

Four competitors, all vying to be the most special limited edition. Who will emerge victorious?

Warning: image-heavy post ahead!

Hakuoki Limited Edition BoxesHere comes our four contestants now: Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (PSP), Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi (3DS), Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi (PS3), and Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds (PS Vita).

Hakuoki Limited Edition SetsHere we have everyone lined up. Kyoto Winds may be the newest of the bunch, but Kyoto Winds is also the biggest!

Hakuoki Limited Edition BacksOooh, they’re striking a pose! Kyoto Winds is going full-on minimalist here. Trying to accent its exclusivity.

Hakuoki Limited Edition ContentsNow they’re starting their wardrobe changes. Lots of different styles here. Demon goes with a classic full artbook and CD combo. Memories cheers itself on with a fan and towel along with a minibook. Stories goes for elegance with a comb, charm, and hair pin in a sakura-patterned box. Or Kyoto Winds tries to outdo its Aksys brethren with a bento box, furoshiki, CD, and artbook.

Hakuoki Limited Edition CDsOooh, Kyoto Winds‘ 20 tracks is directly challenging Demon‘s 12!

Hakuoki Limited Edition ArtbooksDemon tried to beat Memories‘ small minibook with a full artbook, but Kyoto Winds comes out with a hardcover version!

Hakuoki Limited Edition ArtbooksSynchonized pageturning, such camaraderie.

Hakuoki Limited Edition BoxesBut Stories, long thought to be the easy victor, stumbles with the wardrobe malfunction. Lots of ripping and tearing in an otherwise elegant pattern, but Kyoto Winds prefers a cheerful and cute accents.

Hakuoki Limited Edition BoxesMy, Stories was thought to be big, but Stories is dwarfed by Kyoto Winds.

Hakuoki Limited Edition Fabric ItemsBut don’t count out Memories yet! Memories‘ long towel faces off against Kyoto Winds‘ furoshiki.

Hakuoki Limited Edition Fabric ItemsOh my! And we have a stage crasher! The bandana from Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi photobombs the other two! Security!!

Hakuoki Limited Edition GamesAnd here come our four contestants back out for the question round.

Hakuoki Limited Edition Game BacksEach one tackles the “How would you tell your story?” question differently. Demon stumbles with the lack of extras, but Stories picks up major points with its 2-in-1 approach. But will Kyoto Winds‘ half-but-double approach win out in the end?

Hakuoki Limited Edition Game InsertsAnother group pose — hey, Kyoto Winds! Cover yourself up! That’s indecent! Don’t give me that “no one reads a manual” spiel!

Hakuoki Limited Edition Box SidesNow we watch as our four hopefuls slowly exit the stage. Who will win?

May I have the envelope please?

Hakuoki Pageant WinnerTouché.

In other news, I will be working on a full guide for Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds. So updates may be a little slow as although I have much of it done or planned out, stuff like the Encyclopedia slows me down.

LOL I love this. You are not alone, because I have already bought Hakuoki for PSP and PS4, and STILL bought the limited edition of this “new” game. I just really wanted the artbook and the pretty Hakuoki stuff. I’m not even entirely sure what is different about this version of the game. Is it only half of the original game, but with new guys thrown in? I literally just went, Hakuoki!! Pretty!! And hit pre-order.

In general terms, yes. Half but double. But they did re-record the dialogue, upped the visuals, and so far have made some alterations to scenes that make more sense. Unfortunately, they pretty much pilfered Aksys’ script and didn’t always make changes to match the new dialogue.
