Walkthrough

Gameplay and Flow

You play as Chizuru, the protagonist. There are 12 eligible bachelors for this game. Follow along with Chizuru as she lives in Kyoto under the protection of the Shinsengumi. You can change the heroine’s name, but her name is voiced if left as default.

The controls are simple: advance with the X button, and make a selection when prompted. You can quick-save and load with L and R if you want to quickly explore different options. The Start button lets the game run automatically, stopping at choices. Square fast-forwards the text. Left stick shows the text history (square to rewind), and triangle brings up the menu. You can also use the touch screen: tap to skip text, or flick: up for quick save, down for quick load, left for menu, and right for back log.

The game is divided into chapters and sub-chapters. When you make a choice, one of the guy’s love gauge may increase. This is represented by an animation showing a flurry of petals and, when not in a CG, a butterfly on the moon, but you can also check the levels under “Warrior Record” in the menu at any time. As the men’s affection levels rise, the flowers on the trees will bloom. Kyoto Winds is part one of two games. The flow of the game is slightly different than in previous versions. You play through about Chapter 4 of the original game, but Kyoto Winds is divided into five chapters. The rest of the story will be told in a sequel game.

After finishing a route for the first time, the Record of Service will be unlocked. You can then jump to a section you have unlocked, and then choose either high or low romance for one of the guys.

Each man has three endings: the Good Ending (ending movie featuring the guy), Unrequited Love Ending (featuring the sword and compounds), and Bad Ending (basic game over screen). If you follow this guide, you will first get the good endings. Then load up the Record of Service and go to that guy’s Chapter 5 with low romance, this time not choosing the options that give you affection boosts. To save a little bit of time, for most of the guys, once you load Chapter 5, save at the last choice. Choose one option to get the Unrequited Love or Bad Ending’s Fin screen, then load to get the other one. Otherwise, just fast forward either from the Record of Service or your last save.

Please note that this guide is a recommendation. A few different choices here and there are not likely to change your path, although you may miss a picture (CG). This guide is set up to get the most romance boosts, CGs, and scenes involving a character in his route. If you want to get the Platinum trophy, most choices will eventually be made. While this guide is made to be an efficient way to complete the game, first-time players might want to avoid guides and see where their choices take them.

This game takes place over several years, so I’ve tried to include date information since it’s easy to forget over how long this story actually plays out. Important Note: These do not always match the dates in the Record of Service. The Record can be off between what the dates listed and the date it says when you load because of the unlockable scenes. For instance, if you choose 4-3 in the Record of Service that says Mid July 1867 with Hijikata favorability, the title card and game text will say September 1867. There are also times where there will be a slight difference between the loading screen and the in-game text. I believe this is due to the way months and days are counted in the Japanese calendar versus the Western calendar. For instance, 3-6 with Harada will load with March 1867, but the text box will say April 1867. My dates will match either the loading screen or dialogue though.

FAQ

Here I’ll answer some common questions.

What is Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds? How is it different from the other Hakuoki games? Is it a sequel?

No, Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is not a sequel. It is a partial remake of the otome game from Idea Factory and Otomate about a girl who meets the Shinsengumi. Most Westerners are probably familiar with the game thanks to one of its many ports: Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (PSP), Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi (Nintendo 3DS), Hakuoki Mobile (iOS/Android), or Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi (PS3). Note that the PS3 game contained both the main game and its fandisk, which was previously unavailable in English. The fandisk featured addition scenes that took place throughout the game plus some mini-routes. (The PSP game Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi is a fighting game that includes an alternate universe story as well as abridged routes from the original visual novel.)

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds only covers half of the story. If you’ve played the original game, Kyoto Winds ends at about Chapter 4, just as the individual character routes start. Instead, this  game weaves most of the content from Stories of the Shinsengumi‘s Stories section (aka the fandisk) into the storyline. Three new routes starring completely new characters are also included. Please note that the Shinsengumi Adventures sequences are NOT included. Some other changes were made including: altering certain parts of the story and dialogue, altering characters’ clothes, adding new CGs, adding new effects and animations, etc. The rest of the story will continue in a sequel game, Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms. The Vita version of Edo Blossoms will be released in March 2018. The Steam version will likely come out by Summer 2018.

So which version should I buy? Do I need to play Kyoto Winds if I’ve already played through a previous version?

Basically, the decision is between Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi and Hakuoki; Kyoto Winds plus Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms. The PS3 game is definitely cheaper. But you are also missing out on three brand new routes plus three greatly expanded routes. Kazama’s route is also altered significantly. However, as I mentioned, two sequences are missing completely from the remake. I imagine they weren’t included because the tone didn’t fit, but missing out on the Shimabara scenes is a great disappointment for characters like Saito and Yamazaki. Kyoto Winds does a better job of explaining certain plot points, and Chizuru seems to have been made a bit smarter and more proactive. Another key character now plays roles in several routes, but this does kind of take away from the specialness of the route they were originally the star in.

Overall, though, I think most of the changes are for the better here. It’s just that the Vita games will end up costing more than Stories. Really, though, if you’ve played through Stories, Kyoto Winds is different enough to make it worth replaying. It would probably be hard to play through the Vita games first and go back to the PS3 though. As I mentioned before, Saito’s and Yamazaki’s Shinsengumi Adventures are almost worth the price of admission alone, and there are also some extras like the hilarious shorts which SSL was based on.

You can read my full review here.

I will say this though: if you want to see more otome games in English, considering picking up Kyoto Winds to show Otomate your support. While Aksys Games is continuing to license and release games from Otomate, the developer has more than enough games for both companies to release. There’s the popular wish list title Diabolik Lovers for instance (although it’s not something I want). If you want more ideas on what to request, check out my list here.

Will the Hakuoki remakes be ported to PS4? How about Steam?

Idea Factory has released the two Vita games in one PS4 disc under the title Hakuoki Shinkai: Fuukaden (薄桜鬼 真改 風華伝)… in Japan. As of this writing, Idea Factory International has not made any plans to bring over the PS4 version. Yes, it is a disappointment the PS4 version with both parts has been available for a while over there, but for players without a Vita, at least Steam is an option.

Idea Factory International released the Steam version in August 2017. Subtitles are available in English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese.

What’s this about a limited edition?

The limited edition is only available directly from Idea Factory’s site. It includes an artbook, bento box, wrap, CD, and special packaging.

Europe

Is it worth it? Personally, I think I would have liked other good besides a container I’m never going to use. I really wish the game’s limited edition was released outside of the Iffy Store.

What about Hakuoki: SSL?

According to Gematsu, Aksys Games has been trying to convince Idea Factory to let them license it. However, either a) Idea Factory wants more money, b) they weren’t too happy with the reviews and/or sales in Japan and don’t want a repeat in the West, or c) they are holding on to the license so they can release the game themselves.

Source

If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a game set in modern times starring the Shinsengumi. Note that it does not include the new characters from the remake.

Are there any other Hakuoki games?

Japan has two other games: Reimeiroku, a prequel visual novel (not an otome game) about the Shinsengumi and Yuugiroku, a minigame collection starring the characters in chibi form. While both have received a Vita port, the latter also includes Sakamoto, Iba, and Souma.

You should also check out the iOS/Android app Shall We Date: Demon’s Bond. It’s essentially a prequel to Hakuoki set further back in the past.

Are they ever going to stop releasing Hakuoki? I want something else!

Well, SSL and Reimeiroku are certainly possibilities, but at least those would be brand new to the English-speaking market. I can certainly understand wanting to see some of Otomate’s other offerings make the journey over, so make sure you are supporting other otome games like Code: Realize ~Guardian of Rebirth~ and Period Cube. Buy and request, that’s all I can say.

Is there a particular route I should do first? Should I play this game in a certain order?

Before, I recommended doing Hijikata’s route first since his is the longest and covers the most history. In this game, however, all routes end at about the same date and in a similar situation. Still though, because of his status as the main love interest, Hijikata a pretty good — or safe depending on your opinion — choice for your first playthrough. Other ones that are pretty straightforward include Toudou and Saito. The three completely new routes (Iba, Souma, and Sakamoto) tend to show some things from different perspectives, and I don’t think they’re really suited to be done early. Two routes I recommend to save for the end — or at the very least, not to do first — are Kazama and Sakamoto (particularly Sakamoto). Otherwise, Okita and Iba kind of disappear in most routes, so you might want to consider them for later in your playthrough so that you know what is going on in the world.

A bit of additional information: the men’s storylines are kind of divided into groups. You might want to mix them up, or perhaps tackle similar stories in a row. These are based on what I know from the original game and what I gather from this game, but here’s a rough idea (names in no particular order):

Group A: Hijikata, Saito, Yamazaki, Souma
Group B: Harada, Okita, Kazama, Iba, Sakamoto
Group C: Toudou, Sanan, Nagakura

Do I have to keep going through the first few sections? Can’t I just jump ahead to save time?

One of the best changes Idea Factory made was to improve the Record of Service. Upon completing a route, a timeline opens up, allowing you to jump right to a chapter or subchapter. In previous versions, if you wanted to rewatch certain scenes, the Record of Service was generally pretty useless since it reset your romance levels. Well, now you can load any unlocked part of the story and set your flags to high or low romance! Hooray! About time…

Of course, you’ll need to explore different choices if you want to unlock all the CGs. You can always fast forward through the dialogue you’ve already seen though.

Do I have to buy this game? Isn’t it just mostly the common route?

Yes, it’s disappointing that the game ends before most of the really good parts. But you have plenty of time to play it before Edo Blossoms is released. It’s been on sale a few times already, so keep your eyes peeled.

I would have to agree that if you could only buy one, then the second game is more important. I’m sure Chizuru will narrate the story until now, and I don’t believe you need to have a save file from Kyoto Winds to play Edo Blossoms. Still, the three new routes will probably throw you off a bit, especially Iba’s and Sakamoto’s.

Is there any DLC for this game?

Yes.

First are the various themes for the Vita: one for each of the romanceable men, a “Wind Scroll” theme, and a Chibi Character theme. All cost U.S. $.99 each except for the Chibi Character theme which is free. You can also buy the theme bundle for $9.99.

On Steam, for $9.99, you get the OST, PC and mobile wallpapers, and various image galleries.

There is also a “Wind Treasure Box” that contains six new stories featuring Saito, Toudou, Harada, Nagakura, Iba, and Yamazaki showing Kyoto. It costs $3.99 on PSN and $2.99 on Steam.

If you buy on Steam, you can also buy bundles with the DLC to save a little more.

I’ll admit that many of the platinum trophies I have are from visual novels or Telltale releases, because it doesn’t take much effort to 100% them.

If anyone’s reading this can someone please help me out. I messed up the button toggles somehow in the game so now when I press [x] instead of advancing it just hides the text and won’t advance or select or anything. Does anyone know how to fix it? I can’t access the button settings since I don’t have anyway of selecting those settings.

      I don’t know if I can help, but…

Are you playing on Steam or Vita? You’ve tried all the keys? What were you trying to change before you messed with the settings?
