Game Diaries – Final Fantasy VII New Threat Arrange Episode VI

Final Fantasy VII

If you don’t know what my Diaries are, please go here. Spoilers ahoy!

Otherwise, let’s go!

You can skip the flashback if you want, but I’m going for the full experience. The dragon battle with Sephiroth was a little more difficult than I remember, but perhaps I shouldn’t have been playing around with all the different and new spells instead of battling the dragon. There’s a Renew spell that functions like the Angel Whisper Enemy Skill.

Anyway, fast forward to the end. Many people on the Internet complain about the story, but it’s hard to tell if they’re serious or trolling. Yes, parts are similar to VI and you can argue Kefka was more of a threat considering he actually did destroy the world. However, one thing VII does a better job with is having a whole mystery aspect, about how Cloud managed to survive and how someone who has vanished for five years is suddenly murdering people again as he now travels the world. Sure, Terra’s background is a mystery as well, but her story isn’t tied to Kefka nearly as much as Cloud’s is to Sephiroth.

Yuffie’s recruitment is changed. This happens right after Cloud finishes his story.

Oh yeah, 5v1.

One thing I’m looking forward to about Remake is seeing Yuffie (and Vincent) interact with everyone. I do hope they keep Yuffie’s sarcasm meter high and not reduce her to being the young, cheerful one of the group in the style of Selphie/Rikku.

Yuffie innate: 255% evasion after being physically hit, ends when she is hit by magic or after a few turns

Moving on to the Chocobo Farm. The Materia has been reduced to 200 gil (right in my price range), but I had two issues in this area: First, I couldn’t find a Mu for L4 Suicide (which is now L5). Then I couldn’t learn Chocobuckle. L5 Suicide at the start? Flees. Cast while eating Greens? Flees. Wait until finish eating? Flees. Looked it up, and it turns out they’ll only cast it for Mimett Greens. Honestly don’t remember that.

Anyway, those bird-like enemies can wreck you if you’re unprepared. They move fast and just peck and kick at you. But Aerith spammed Quake enough to learn Breath of the Earth, and then I had her use it 6 times in one battle to get Fury Brand. Aerith out, Yuffie in.

First battle in Mythril Mines was against something called a Mythril Diver, an eel-like creature.

Final Fantasy VII New Threat Mythril Diver

Thing was SCARY. Everything else wasn’t so bad (especially if you take away their MP), but thankfully Demi helped against the Diver.

Added battle against Rude/Elena.

Poison did work well, but Elena can remove it and Rude can heal. I switched from using Poison because of the Turk Esuna, but I should have just kept using it and just outdamage her. A little longer than I expected, but that’s my own fault. Yuffie da MVP. Pulled it out for the team.

Next screen.

Weird save point in upper cave, probably the bonus dungeon I’ve heard about. Rank Up system is now formally introduced: each character earns hidden SP, when earn enough, can go to any Save Point and choose one of four stat boosts. I showed the introduction and one example. All stats get +5, but about 15 other points are broken up into different packages. A great way to customize the party. Do you choose to help boost their weakest stats, make them an all-rounder, or give them a more specialized role?

If you’re curious as to the options, here they are, straight from the documentation.

Cloud is going STR/MAG for his Limits and to spell spam, Barret needs to tank. The girls I’m a little more torn on, but I never realized Aerith’s Spirit was on the low side. Tifa definitely isn’t going down a MAG route.

Yuffie learned Clear Tranquil, still hunting for Red’s 2-1. Boomerang stolen. I always equip that on her right away after recruiting her, so I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve ever used Four-Point Shuriken.

On to Fort Condor and then Junon!

If you rank FF baddies based on the destruction they cause I guess everyone pales in comparison to Kefka.

Ultimecia didn’t do too bad either. She did compress time after all.
