Review:Not Safe for Work

I Only Like the Fingers of the Guy I Hate, you can bet this is going to be one classy manga.

So, the first problem with the manga is the incredibly rushed setup. The manga opens with Mahiro and Shouta (whose given name is I believe only revealed in a class list, so it’s easy to miss) engaging in foreplay, and then we see how Mahiro is Ms. Independent who flees when a man starts sexually assaulting her. Then she dreams of her time in high school and how she worked hard but always was #2 to a guy who never put forth any effort. Suddenly, she gets blamed for a photo shoot going wrong and bringing the company to the verge of bankruptcy. The whole situation doesn’t make sense considering how hard she works. Of course, all people make mistakes, but it’s never explained how she got the time wrong and where the model she was supposed to bring was. I mean, did she copy something down wrong? Put the wrong time in her phone? Why did no one call her when she was late? The whole thing is just a sloppy excuse for Mahiro to be indebted and chained to Shouta.

Shouta continues his sadistic behavior, including inserting and activating a vibrator during a meeting. (WTF.) Mahiro has realized that this perverted cameraman is the genius slacker from high school, and she is flummoxed by his sometimes sweet behavior and passion for his work. We learn the (dumb) reason for his behavior to Mahiro, and then the two have to make decisions about their future together. A rather rushed future, I might add.

I admire Akiduki’s goal of trying to not make Mahiro just some weak-willed damsel. But it’s just so jarring that she leaves a gathering with her friends and coworkers and is almost immediately dragged up to a hotel room by three strange men. And then don’t worry; her old enemy from high school will then “disinfect” her. The whole story is just a pile of excuses to try to get to the typical happily ever after story rather than a natural chain of events. Even Mahiro’s cousin is suddenly introduced toward the very end to have a stupid confession from a man she considers almost a brother, just to find a reason to have Shouta feel jealous.

The art, on the other hand, I don’t really have strong complaints about. It’s a bit safe or stereotypical, but eh. I mean, the artists who are truly unique are rare, and there’s something to be had for manga that isn’t filled with misshapen faces and empty backgrounds. Of course, the manga being rushed and not providing solid visual evidence that, say, Mahiro’s meeting schedule got lost is a major issue, but I fault that more on the story than the art. The only thing I kind of noticed is that Akiduki doesn’t seem to have a huge range of facial expressions (all the eyes-half-open shots in particular tend to look the same), but this is only a three-chapter, one volume story, so it’s hard to judge her style harshly. After all, I’d rather have more of an upset Mahiro when Shouta is being a jerk than her openly accepting his actions.

Final Comments:

Of course, many will argue that smut isn’t written for the story. However, a smutty manga is still a manga, and it should have a story. I Only Like the Fingers of the Guy I Hate‘s plot rings hollow, especially since Mahiro is seen by others as rather strong and that the two of them have known each other beforehand.

We’re only two manga in and I’m already contemplating the implications the release of these unabashedly problematic manga have on Asian culture. I mean, that god damn title. YIKES.

The good news: this is the worst title in this group.

With a title like that how can the manga not be classy? Haha. Perhaps my office should consider buying vibrators to spice up our dull meetings?

Makes you wonder what some rejected ideas for the title were…
