Summary:

Toko is shocked when she discovers she the only girl at a formerly all-boy school. The guys, on the other hand, are disappointed: they think Toko is an ugly geek. But the two most popular boys at school, Jun and Kyosuke, sense that this ugly duckling is really a swan.

Review:Not Safe for Work

I started off calling this series of reviews by calling a trashy lead-up to Valentine’s Day. But not all have been trashy; some are cute and pretty sweet. Geeky Girl Makeover, on the other hand, is exactly what I imagined these so-called trashy manga to be.

Seriously, ugh. Where to start… Toko is a plain Jane, and she thinks she can just get through her new school quietly until graduation despite being the only female on campus. (The manga states she’s 18, so I’m guessing she’s a third-year in high school, but I’m not sure.) While most of the boys take an instant dislike to her, Jun (the light-haired one) and Kyosuke (the dark-haired one) one-sidely decide to make Toko over. First, they do the usual makeover stuff: change her hairstyle, put on makeup, give her new clothes, etc. But they announce she needs some self-confidence as well. So do they do exercises like practice saying no or having Toko say what’s good about herself?

Nope, they toss Toko into the bathtub and start having a threesome despite her objections.

………..

The manga mentions this is the first year that the school has gone co-ed. But the two guys talk about how they’re going to “target” her next… so have they been doing this to random girls from other schools, did these makeovers in middle school, have other projects, or what? Because I question how they go up to a strange girl, start grabbing her chest (to test her bra), and then bring her into the bathroom like it’s a natural turn of events. And then when she’s in trouble later, bring her into a storage closet to continue where they left off.

So as Jun and Kyosuke play with their new project (and later have some “comfort time” with Toko individually), Toko finds herself in the midst of a love triangle between the two of them. Honestly, I’m not sure why she finds herself drawn to one over the other, as they’re both smart, rich, and sadistic, although Jun is more talkative while Kyosuke is quieter. There is really nothing that makes you want to root for one guy over the other, and nothing that makes one a better match for Toko than the other. I’m actually more surprised the author didn’t go for a O3P ending, as she spends more time doing things with the both of them than individually. At least the manga wouldn’t have tried to dress up the story with an ultra-hollow “it’s true love!!!” storyline.

Even worse than Toko giving in to Kyosuke and Jun is how little she takes responsibility. After rendezvous with both men, she mentions how she was forced into one encounter and the other isn’t her fault. Um, hello, Toko, you went along with it! Plus you’re the one who could have ended up pregnant and not known who the father was! Plus, the closest thing to a friend Toko gains outside of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb is helping a couple of students answer a problem on homework. I don’t know if Toko moved from somewhere else, but she really needed a best friend. Maybe that Sassy Gay Friend from those Internet videos.

The art is pretty simplified shoujo. There aren’t a lot of backgrounds or screentones, and even makeover! Toko doesn’t look any more beautiful than the average high school manga female protagonist. As such, the series tends to look as plain and uninspired as the story itself. If you haven’t picked up on it already, I just don’t care anymore. This is just some sexual scenes dotted with Toko cleaning the classroom and then one date scene. Seriously, that’s it. I guess the only positive is that Toko didn’t go from an ugly fatty to supermodel overnight like in many makeover stories. She takes off her glasses, but she doesn’t become some other person.

Final Comments:

Super trashy. Geeky Girl Makeover probably should have just gone the full-on porn route instead of… whatever this is.

It is funny how in many romances an ugly duckling becomes a babe just by taking her glasses off. Perhaps the disguise that Superman uses isn’t so far fetched after all.
