Overview

Hello, and welcome to my guide on Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms.

Hakuoki; Edo Blossoms is an otome game, a visual novel aimed at females that heavily focuses on romance. It is a continuation of Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds, so I highly recommend playing that one first. Before you begin, though, please read the Gameplay and Flow section under the Walkthrough for some important information and tips.

Gameplay and Flow

You play as Chizuru, the protagonist. There are 12 eligible bachelors for this game. Follow along with Chizuru as she witnesses the Shinsengumi fight in the Japanese Revolution (Boshin War). You can change the heroine’s name, but her name is voiced if left as default.

The Vita controls are simple: advance with the X button, and make a selection when prompted. You can quick-save and load with L and R if you want to quickly explore different options. The Start button lets the game run automatically, stopping at choices. Square fast-forwards the text. Left stick shows the text history (square to rewind), and triangle brings up the menu. You can also use the touch screen: tap to skip text, or flick: up for quick save, down for quick load, left for menu, and right for back log.

The game is divided into chapters. During the prologue, which is a recap of the prequel game, you will choose whose story you want to see. After that, when you make a choice, the love gauge for the man whose route you are doing may increase. This is represented by an animation showing a flurry of petals and, when not in a CG, a butterfly on the moon, but you can also check the levels under “Warrior Record” in the menu at any time. As the men’s affection levels rise, the flowers on the trees will bloom. You will also need to watch most of the men’s health via the Corruption Gauge. The story starts right after Kyoto Winds, right when most of the story shifts to Edo.

After finishing a route for the first time, the Record of Service will be unlocked. You can then jump to a section you have unlocked, and then choose either high or low Romance for one of the guys and high or low Corruption.

There are four types of endings: the Good Ending (ending movie featuring the guy and a Final Chapter), Unrequited Love Ending (monochrome images and backgrounds), Bad Endings (dark red screen with flowers), and Game Overs (bright red with mountains). Each of the 12 romanceable men have one Good Ending, 1 Unrequited Love Ending, 1 Bad Ending, and then up to 4 different Game Overs. If you follow this guide, you will first get the good endings. You will then need to load saves or use the Record of Service to see the not-so-happy outcomes.

If you want to save some time, create a separate save file in the first three chapters every time the choice between giving blood, giving medicine, or making him endure it comes up. It won’t shave a lot of time off, so if you like to keep your files neat or are running out of space, you can just use the Record of Service.

However, I am writing this guide as if multiple saves are being used. You should have four save files for most routes: one main save and then three at the first three bloodlusts incidents. When I say “Go to…”, I mean using the Record of Service. When I say “Load up…”, I mean use the corresponding save file from that bloodlust incident. If you do not use multiple saves, you may need to enter the previous Chapter in order to get the Corruption/Romance values you need. Just follow the guide until you reach the bloodlust incident. Quick Save and Quick Load can be useful if you are unsure.

The super-short version to unlocking everything is to always give blood for the Good Ending. Then keep reloading, going to every bloodlust incident to make him endure it. At the second incident, give medicine, then make him endure it. Finally, go to the fourth chapter and choose the low Romance options. This will get you most of the endings and gallery alternatives.

For the unhappy endings, in this guide, I prioritized affection options only because, if you’ve chosen them before, the “Skip Read” feature can help speed things up. The Bad Endings and Game Overs are controlled by Corruption rather than low Romance, so feel free to choose the non-affection boosting options when going back and exploring.

Finally, there is a normal route if you choose Chizuru in the selection screen, but there are no decisions to make. Select and read to the end to unlock a couple things and move on.

Please note that this guide is a recommendation. Outside of a few decisions, one or two “wrong” choices will not prevent you from getting your desired ending. While this guide is made to be an efficient way to complete the game, first-time players might want to avoid guides and see where their choices take them.

This game takes place over several months, so I’ve tried to include date information since it’s easy to forget over how long this story actually plays out. These are shown from the dialogue screen, but time often advances in the middle of a Chapter.

You should unlock all these automatically as you play through all the routes. Depending on the order you choose, many will also be unlocked in an alternative route.

Note that there are several instances where terms are  missing their red highlight when they first appear. (They still have the quick definition feature though.) Usunomiya Castle is also misspelled as “Ustunomiya Castle” in the Encyclopedia.

FAQ

Here I’ll answer some common questions.

What is Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms? How is it different from the other Hakuoki games? Is it a sequel?

Yes, Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms is a direct sequel taking place immediately after the events of Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds. Together, the two games are an enhanced remake of the original Hakuoki story featured in several ports: Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom (PSP), Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi (Nintendo 3DS), Hakuoki Mobile (iOS/Android), and Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi (PS3). (The PSP game Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi is a fighting game that includes an alternate universe story as well as abridged routes from the original visual novel.) Each version has its own bonuses and extras — some major, some minor.

Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms contains the bulk of the character-specific routes.

Do I need to play Kyoto Winds first? Do I need a save file from Kyoto Winds?

No, you do not need a save file from Kyoto Winds.

If you’ve never played a Hakuoki game before, start with Kyoto Winds. Info in this game will provide summaries of what has happened so far, but I still think you should play the first game before Edo Blossoms.

If you’ve played any other Hakuoki version besides Kyoto Winds, the story for most of the main Shinsengumi members should be quite familiar. The other, returning members of the Shinsengumi have routes that fairly in line with the events of the main game. Sakamoto, Iba, and Souma (Sakamoto in particular), they have fairly unique tales, and you will likely be confused. Kazama’s route has also been significantly altered.

However, even if you have played a different version, Kyoto Winds does feature several improvements like an actually useful Record of Service, enhanced graphics, rerecorded voice acting, and more.

Will the Hakuoki remakes be ported to PS4?

Idea Factory has released the two Vita games in one PS4 disc under the title Hakuoki Shinkai: Fuukaden (薄桜鬼 真改 風華伝)… in Japan. As of this writing, Idea Factory International has not made any plans to bring over the PS4 version. Yes, it is a disappointment the PS4 version with both parts has been available for a while over there, but for players without a Vita, at least Steam is an option.

Now that all the text has been translated, it is possible Fuukaden will be brought over to the West. After all, Aksys Games is releasing the fandisk of Idea Factory’s Code: Realize on Vita as well as the PS4 original/fandisk double pack on the same day. If you really want to see Fuukaden, request it. But please, only request if you are actually going to buy it.

What’s this about a limited edition?

The limited edition is only available directly from Idea Factory’s site. It includes an artbook, pins, a mug, a calendar, and special packaging.

North America link
Europe link

Is it worth it? To me, it’s better than the first game’s limited edition, but I wish all twelve guys were featured on a pin. The artbook is still the main draw in my opinion, but it’s disappointing the limited edition is an Iffy Store exclusive.

Are there any other Hakuoki games?

Japan has three other games: Reimeiroku, a prequel visual novel (not an otome game) about the Shinsengumi; SSL, an alternate universe story; and Yuugiroku, a minigame collection starring the characters in chibi form. While all three are available on Vita, the latter also includes Sakamoto, Iba, and Souma.

You should also check out the iOS/Android app Shall We Date: Demon’s Bond. It’s essentially a prequel to Hakuoki set further back in the past.

Is there a particular route I should do first? Should I play this game in a certain order?

Since Edo Blossoms has the story starting to branch out in very different directions, there is no recommended order.

That being said… Hijikata is the main love interest and has the longest route, so he is a good choice to complete first if you don’t know much about this time period. Yukimura’s route (aka the normal route) and Souma’s also cover quite a bit of the war, although Yukimura’s is just a story with no player choices.

Kazama, Sakamoto, and, to a lesser extent, Iba have routes that are more of an outsider’s perspective on the war and the Shinsengumi, so that’s also something to consider. I wouldn’t suggest these routes to do first for newcomers to Hakuoki.

The men’s storylines are kind of divided into groups. You might want to mix them up, or perhaps tackle similar stories in a row. Here’s a rough idea (names in no particular order):

Group A: Hijikata, Saito, Yamazaki, Souma
Group B: Harada, Okita, Kazama, Iba, Sakamoto
Group C: Toudou, Sanan, Nagakura

Also, Hijikata, Okita, Saito, Toudou, and Harada generally have longer, more intricate routes than the others, as they were the main options in the original game. Otherwise, choose who you want to, as characters in one route often have different motives and roles in each route.

What determines what kind of ending I get?

Most importantly, Corruption. If it reaches Critical, Chizuru’s story will end badly. If your Corruption remains low, then the game uses your Romance level to determine whether Chizuru gets a happily-ever-after or not. The only exceptions are Harada and Kazama, as their endings are fully determined by Romance.

Romance is obviously increased by chosing a specific response at dialogue choices. It starts at Closed and goes up to Full Bloom. For Corruption, giving blood lowers it, medicine keeps it the same, and enduring raises it. The levels are Low, Mid, High, and Critical.

What’s the difference between Bad Endings and Game Overs?

Note that some guides I’ve read in Japanese consider them all Bad Endings, and I would normally too. Both show a miserable fate for the characters. The ending screens are virtually the same, but the Game Overs have a brighter red screen with mountains, and the Bad Endings have a large flowering tree. Bad Endings take place later in the story and are usually longer.

For the purposes of the Platinum trophy, however, these are counted as two different types. You do need to see all for the Platinum, but I’ve separated them so that you can hopefully figure out which type of ending you are missing if you haven’t unlocked “How ‘Bout Dat” or “Bummersville, Population: You” in your playthroughs.

Do I need to use loads? Can’t I just use the Record of Service?

Generally, yes, you can use the Record of Service. However, note that for a couple of CGs and Game Overs/Bad Endings, you may need to go to a previous Chapter to get the level of Corruption (or low Romance) needed to get the ending you want.

Note that for some characters, they only have three different blood/endure CGs, making Save 3 unneccessary since you can just choose low Romance, high Corruption in Chapter 4 (Hijikata Chapter 5). However, whether you need to load up a previous save or can just jump around with the Record of Service depends on what you have unlocked already.

Why does your guide only chose the “wrong” answers in the Unrequited Love Ending? Are the other non-Romance options not necessary to unlock anything?

Again, Romance generally only comes into play late Chapter 4 (5 for Hijikata), when you’ve gone past the points for a Game Over and have a Corruption level below critical. This guide lists the “right” answers because, well, why not add to the tragedy of a love unfilled? If you want to see the conversations with the other choices, go for it.

If you followed this guide, though, some scenes will be longer because they’ll show the full sequence and not end early.  However, if you’ve already chosen the Romance-boosting options, you be able to speed through with “Skip Read”. It’s often faster, especially if you put the Skip Read speed to max. Of course, if you’ve already selected the other option, then it doesn’t matter which one you pick to use Skip Read.

Is there any DLC?

Like Kyoto Winds, the Steam version has some bonus stories, wallpaper, and digital artbooks that you can buy individually or as part of a bundle. The bonus stories are also available to be purchased on PSN for the Vita.

I didn’t get a trophy! I’m missing a trophy!

First, also make sure you actually enter the Gallery/Encyclopedia to actually trigger them. Also, make sure you got the Normal Ending.

I noticed a mistake in your guide!

This definitely looks like a lot of work to write so great job! I doubt I’d go for all of the endings as I usually stick with the first one that I get unless I really dislike it but cool to see how things could have turned out

Thank you! 🙂 I had the base for the guide since I wrote one for a previous version of the game, but there was still a lot of new content to uncover.
It is definitely fun though to play through blindly and see whether you lead the characters to happiness or ruined their lives forever.

Do you get any financial reward for submitting this to GameFaqs? Seems like a lot of work. I am sure visual novel completionists will appreciate your hard work.

Generally, no. Most guides submitted get nothing unless either it’s a) a most-requested or in-demand guide or b) a contest winner. My guide for the previous iteration of the game did have a bounty, and I did win for the prequel game’s FAQ though. Got lucky.

Hello, i have a question, its like a lot of spolier but its eating me, i really really need to know. the doubt is about Hijikata´s good ending so if someone who hasn´t play it yet is reading this, please refrain to read till the end.
(Ps. I liked a lot the guides you make for both parts of the game, I have seen other but, this is my favorite. I am sure that make it was such a hard work, so that make me feel grateful)

If you ever get a copy of the PS3 Stories of the Shinsengumi, you can see epilogues for him as well as some of the other guys, although the canon might have been altered slightly due to the remake’s changes. I don’t see why they would make Hijikata die though in his good ending, so yes, I’m pretty sure he survives.

Thank you for your reply! you are right, they shouldn´t kill him in his good ending. But because they mention that he may die if he use his fury´s power over and over again, and then that picture after his duel with Kazama, i ended misunderstanding the ending… I Think i have seen too many anguish endings to my own good!
Im glad to have been really wrong.

  5. Hi, Okitas route for the Bad Ending CG in Ch4 you wrote “Alternatively, go to Okita Chapter 4 with low Romance and high Corruption and choose “I want blood.”” it should be Romance & Corruption LOW for the option of [I want Blood / Endure it] to come up. It was the only CG i was missing following your guide. Other than that, thank you and good work!

Thanks a lot for the guide, it’s amazing and served me greatly!!!

Anyways… I’m missing the last item in the event gallery (Others) the one you say “Obtain all other CGs.” I have all other event items, but this one didn’t unlock…

It’s has been some time since you wrote the guide, but… perhaps someone will remember if that happened to them 🙁

Most likely, you are still missing one of the CGs. It can be easy to miss one of the many different give blood and endure backgrounds.
Go through the CG section of the game and count to see if the number of images you have match up with the Gallery section of the guide. (I.E. Hijikata has four pictures in slot #2, another four in slot #3, etc.)
If you’re still having trouble, let me know.
