Game Diaries – Final Fantasy VII New Threat Arrange Episode XVI

Final Fantasy VII

If you don’t know what my Diaries are, please go here. Spoilers ahoy!

Otherwise, let’s go!

This is going to be a filler episode. My goal was to start racking up the kills for a lot of my mage characters and healers, as they don’t get to deal the finishing blow nearly as often as the physical attackers. I headed toward Junon forests since they often have the 5 Copperwires battle.

The one who needed the kills the most was Cait Sith. He is built toward a mage tank, but his Magic stat isn’t as high as some of the others’. Cid also is behind the curve as the newest member, but he is kicking butt.

Also, I was surprised to see Cait Sith learned Slots. I thought he had 4 levels of Limit Break in this mod? But I still figured I’ll figure out what his 2-2 Limit was later and just get his 3-1 for now. So I kept Antipode’ing and Aqualung’ing the heck out of enemies… but he wouldn’t learn his next Limit.

Everyone else learned their Level 3-1 Limits within a few battles. I often spent more time switching party members than using them in battle. But Cait Sith was still being stubborn! OK, maybe you can’t jump ahead like in vanilla.

I then needed to use Limits several times in order to get 3-2. So I headed to Nibelheim. I basically used the wolves to get the use counts. But I’m guessing Cait still only has two levels. I guess Sega Chief didn’t want people to accidentally wind up with a solo party thanks to Slots.

I also picked up Kjata so I don’t forget.

And as I was about to continue the story, I happened to swing by the Chocobo Farms. Should I try to take on our dear friend again, or will it end in another horrible defeat?

By the way, here was my first attempt from so long ago:

Speed: 2x

Soooooo…. why not? Maybe I’ll get curbstomped again.

This is my second real attempt (third overall). I thought someone would be kicked out, so I was a little unsure of how to fight the Alpha Zolom. If you watch the video, he gets really scary once he stands up. In my previous try, I wasn’t prepared to be Silenced, and that stopped me from getting the Cure/Life spells I needed to get off. Stupidly had Elemental-Fire in Aerith’s armor both times when I actually needed Elemental-Alexander/Restore. Alpha is Holy Elemental. Anyway, just a few adjustments to my original strategy (like switching Earth Materia to Cloud and let Aerith focus on healing), and I got through it. Well, Cloud and Tifa did anyway. Dang it, just couldn’t get off that MBarrier in time.

Also, not sure if I said this before, but I really like how Summon Materia works in this game. One-shot powerful attack with a chance of status effects instead of worrying about leveling them up. In the original, it’s hard to know which ones to invest in, and several are easily missed. Here, they can do a butt-load of damage, but the -10% HP is a harsh penalty on low HP characters.

KO KOunter: 37

I snake kicks out the one that deals the most damage, so I always let Aerithg do the attacking then brace for impact when he releases his Beta. I swear to gawd, I often don’t do tricky enemy puzzle battles because Beta ends it early. hahaha
and I’m not familiar with making characters into mages. I seriously just spread the materia all over, lol. I master all of them by the end of disc 2 since I relly enjoy grinding in this game. The sunskippable summon is annoying though, especially if you summon KoR.
btw, i got Aerith’s final limit level, but I never saw it myself. hahaha I forgot she dies in the end, lol.

Don’t remind me about the long summon sequences! Ugh.
Wow, you do love the battle system to master all of them by Disc 2. Materia really is a fun system.
Aw, you never got to experience the awesomeness that is Great Gospel? Darn!

Thank goodness by the time FF8 came around it was no longer necessary to see the full summon animation all the time. You could make a cup of tea and come back whilst KOTR was doing its thing.

Yeah, but FF8 made you work for the full power of summons by boosting, and FF9’s shorter summons meant less power. At least in FF7 you could walk away without losing any power. Thank goodness FFX had options to skip the summons and not lose power.

I never about great gospel when I first played the game, and I forgot to see it when I am playing it now, lol. But I was surprised how powerful Aerith is in battle. Her limits are super useful.
