News – Yen Press Licenses The Irregular at Magic High School

Yen Press announced on their Twitter that they have licensed the light novel series The Irregular at Magic High School (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei) and manga series.

UPDATE: Anime News Network confirmed the manga series is The Honour at Magic High School (Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei).

Yen Press has really been doing well in the licensing department lately. I’m sure this one will be a big hit for them. I’ll be picking up this series!

News – Viz Media Licenses Bloody Mary & Honey So Sweet

After licensing QQ Sweeper and Idol Dreams earlier this month, Shojo Beat’s Twitter announced it has acquired Bloody Mary, a vampire shounen-ai series by SAMAMIYA Akaza, and Honey So Sweet (Honey), a love story between a shy girl and deliquent by MEGURO Amu. You can read more about them on Shojo Beat’s Tumblr.

I’m sure I’ll be picking up the latter. Vampires…meh.

Viz Media also has been picking up some of Tokyopop’s old releases for a digital release (Someday’s Dreamers: Spellbound, Girls Bravo). Let’s hope more of Tokyopop’s titles are rescued and released in print!

I’ll be posting today’s manga review shortly.

News – Japanese Women Rank Overused Shoujo Tropes

Anime News Network posted an interesting ranking from Japanese site Goo of what 500 women thought were the most overused shoujo manga tropes. As TV Tropes explains, tropes are not cliches, but when the whole manga is basically one of these main tropes after another…ugh. Bring something new to the table. A good manga needs at least one major difference or twist to help set it apart, especially in shoujo school life manga.
